Sunfire SubRosa – world’s first flat panel subwoofer?

California-based manufacture Sunfire has unveiled the SubRosa, which it claims is the world’s first flat panel subwoofer.

Measuring just 9.5cm thick it can be wall mounted or pushed out of site under a sofa to deliver 2,700 watts of power.

It does however require a separate amplifier box and uses Sunfire’s own StillBass Anti-Shake technology to deliver huge amounts of bass without the kind of movement you’d expect from a sub with this much power.

SubRosa founder and chief designer Bob Carver used Newton’s Third Law of Motion to create an actuator that moves in opposition to the woofer, cancelling out almost all mechanical vibrations.

The Sunfire includes a pair of 10in bass drivers and the amp has flexible crossover, phase and level controls. It has balanced XLR, RCA and speaker-level inputs, as well as auto set-up and room correction using a supplied microphone.

The company has also launched a new 1,400-watt subwoofer called the Atmos which should be available later this year. It’s a compact 10in cube and Sunfire claims it uses technologies pulled from space exploration and tyre development to deliver more bass from a smaller box.

No word yet on UK availability or pricing.
