CES 2012: MartinLogan Motion SLM ultraslim speaker

January 11, 2012 — Article

US-based electrostatic speaker manufacturer MartinLogan has unveiled its new slimline design, the Motion SLM.

It’s just 3.7cm thick, and intended to be used in multichannel home cinema systems along with MartinLogan’s floorstanding models rather than for stereo hi-fi.

The Motion SML can be wall-mounted as a centre speaker using the supplied brackets, set on a shelf or stand using its ‘kick-stand’ brackets or the curved black-glass base.

When hung on the wall, it still only projects 4.65cm into the room, so it’s still very discreet, and wont’ stand out if placed on either side of a wall-mounted TV.

It can be placed either horizontally or vertically and has the same 80-degree dispersion pattern in either plane, so it can be used as a centre or satellite channel (handily, the logo on the grille can be rotated to suit).

MartinLogan says much of the Motion SML’s slimness is due to its Folded Motion tweeter, which has eight times the surface area of a typical 25mm dome tweeter, as well as the twin 10cm ultraslim fibre-cone woofers and a pair of 10cm high-velocity passive bass radiators.

The MartinLogan Motion SML goes on sale later this year for $500 – no word yet on availability and price for the UK.
