"This speaker, which is generally found on or under your television plays a key role in the retranscription of the sonic scenario. It takes charge of the centre third of the sonic set, notably including the dialogues. The two other thirds - right and left – are carried by the main speakers.

In as much as around 70% of the action of a film takes place in the centre, you can imagine to what point the centre channel speaker is important, and to what extent there should be a good integration or coherence with the main speakers. Imagine a character in a film who moves from right to left while he’s talking. If the centre channel speaker is a different brand from your main ones, our character will have two different tones of voice depending upon whether he is in the centre or on the edge of the screen.

To be sure not to come a cropper in the choice of a centre channel speaker, it suffices to buy it from the same manufacturer and in the same range as the main speakers. The manufacturers make life easier for you because nowadays there’s no longer a range of main speakers that doesn’t have corresponding central and rear speakers. The difference between the main and centre channel speakers stems from the fact that it’s not easy to place a speaker of the same size on or under a television as it is in the corners of the room. The manufacturers have thus redesigned the centre channel speakers to make them smaller and easier to place. Nevertheless, a coherent centre channel speaker has the same types of mid-range and tweeters as the main speakers, with the difference being that the bass speaker cones, known as "woofers", are done away with due to their bulk. "
