Naim has announced a second speaker for its Ovator range. The S-400 is a trimmed down version of the S-600, designed for use in smaller rooms.

The floorstander measures 106cm tall and includes two 16.5cm bass drivers beneath a 46mm flat panel Balanced Mode Radiator for the midband and treble.

The woofers are housed in separate 15-litre sealed enclosures with ‘controlled low-hysteresis air pressure equalisers’ designed to reduce the potential for distortion caused by air leaks (Naim says that a true sealed box is “virtually impossible” in the world of loudspeaker design). Bass extension goes down to 36Hz in room, and the treble up to 35kHz.

The bass drivers use long-fibre paper cones, a 38mm voice coil and a pressure die-cast chassis, while the BMR has a Nomex diaphragm with honeycomb construction, and a special suspension system to reduce cross coupling.

Sensitivity is quoted as 88dB/W/m, the nominal/minimum impedance is 4ohms, and the speakers will work with amplifiers from 35-130 watts.

The MDF cabinet has curved sides and a sloping top to help reduce standing waves, and is decoupled from the die-cast plinth by a leaf spring.

The Naim Ovator S-400 will be available from November for £2,995 (standard finish) or £3,295 in gloss white and £3,395 in rosewood.
