Tannoy’s latest flagship loudspeaker is the Kingdom Royal and it gets its first UK demo at the National Audio Show, Whittlebury Hall, this weekend.

The £35,000 speakers weigh 120kg each and are primarily intended for the Far Eastern market, where Tannoy’s Prestige range, including the original Kingdom, have made a strong showing.

The Prestige range focuses on classic Tannoy designs of the past, with retro stylings supported by up to the minute audio technology. The Kingdom Royal however boasts an all-new design, with a 30cm dual concentric driver with a newly developed ultra-light, ultra-rigid main cone with a huge motor system and a 7.5cm horn-loaded compression driver powered by its own 1.5kg ferrite motor.

Meanwhile, the treble unit’s domes and voice coils are cryogenically treated to help relieve stresses in the microstructure of the dome and reduce crystal boundary imperfections in the voice coil.

The crossover between these is set at 700Hz and at 16kHz the dual concentric speaker gives way to the Kingdom Royal’s SuperTweeter, which runs up to 54kHz and uses a dome which has been vapour-coated with a thin ceramic layer for high internal damping and low coloration.

The low end is handled by a 38cm multifibre bass driver which will run down to 15Hz, and the drivers are linked by a double-decked crossover, which is again cryogenically treated and mounted on a free-floating suspension system.

The cabinet is made from high-density fibreboard and birch ply, and finished with layers of wood veneer, deep gloss lacquer and smooth black satin, topped with Italian leather for the SuperTweeter’s dispersion panel.

Tannoy’s UK distributor Icon Distribution will be hosting the Tannoy room, with Max Maud, Bill Leigh and Brian Berkovitz joining Tim Lount (VP of residential loudspeakers at Tannoy) throughout the show.
