Optoma’s latest is the ThemeScene HD87 projector, its new flagship home cinema model.

Replacing the HD86, the new model starts at £2,799 and promises improved brightness and contrast, as well as a new version of the company’s Puremotion picture-processing engine, which is designed to eliminate judder while optimising the projector for 1080p 24fps content.

Brightness has been boosted to 1700 ANSI Lumens, and the ANSI Contrast ratio is 800:1, with dynamic contrast at 80,000:1. Optoma claims the ANSI contrast figure gives a more accurate measure of real-world performance, since it’s measured when the screen is showing both black and white elements simultaneously, rather than the more common “Full On, Full Off” technique, which measures first black, then white.

Other improvements include the latest Puremotion 3 processing technology which Optoma claims effectively eliminates judder and motion-blurring. The HD87 also features an improved Colour Management System and Dynamic Black, along with a user-adjustable nine-step iris and vertical and horizontal lens-shift.

There are three HDMI inputs as well as component, RGB/VGA, composite and S-video inputs, plus two 12V trigger sockets and an RS232 port.

The Optoma HD87 is on sale now and comes with a choice of three lens options: £2,799 for the standard lens (1.54-1.93), £2,999 for a long-throw version (1.93-2.9:1), and £3,399 for a short-throw lens (0.77:1).
