BBC Radio 3 has become the first BBC station to broadcast ‘HD Sound’ offering improved bandwidth and better audio quality.

BBC Radio 3 in ‘HD’

Following an initial trial at this year’s Proms, the station has launched a superior 320kbps feed alongside the existing stream, which broadcasts at 192kbps.

Initially, the stream will only be available for live programmes (not on demand) for UK listeners only from the BBC Radio 3 website, though the ambition is to integrate HD Sound into iPlayer and Radioplayer as the technology develops.

The Beeb says that HD Sound will also be available for special events on other BBC Radio networks, such as BBC Radio 2’s trial of the technology for Elton John’s Electric Proms performance in October.

Tim Davie, Director of BBC Audio and Music, says: “We are excited to be driving innovation in the radio industry. I expect Radio 3 to be the first of an overall industry drive to keep improving the quality of audio for listeners.”
