The renowned Dutch rock band, Within Temptation’s new live DVD has been mixed using PMC. Their latest surround production aptly named the “Black Symphony” has innovative uses of orchestral arrangements and is accompanied by the distinctive voice of their lead singer Sharon Den Adel that has made them the masters of their genre over a decade. The infamous Kerrang! Magazine, described their latest release as “the greatest show on earth”.

The DVD was produced at Galaxy Studios in Mol, Belgium – the leading facility in mainland Europe and mixed by Ronald Prent, one of the foremost exponents of multi-channel engineering, using a PMC IB2S surround sound system and a 160 channel API console.

The IB2S features the large PMC 75 soft dome unit that is legendary for its definition and mid-range clarity. The phenomenally detailed bass response which reaches to a flat 25Hz is generated by the combination of a PMC ten inch flat piston driver and the effects of the IB’s ATL (Advanced Transmission Line) enclosure. The .1 effects channel within the system is handled by a single SB100 sub that also features an identical ten inch PMC piston.

Robert Westerholt, of Within Temptation described the process:

“Ronald’s PMC system truly brought out every single aspect of Black Symphony”. He added, “Bringing together the band, a full orchestra and choir took over 130 separate tracks, which was a real challenge!”, “But with his system it all came together perfectly”. Robert’s passing comment was, “I’m definitely looking into getting these in my own studio”

Other high profile users of similar systems include Kraftwerk, producers Arnic Robinson and Ward Archer, all of whom have praised them for their clarity and the benefits of high resolution.
