Sony has announced a budget Blu-ray player at its IFA press conference in Berlin.

Sony BDP-S185

The Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray player is already available in the shops for £80 despite only just receiving its official launch.

The new machine includes Sony’s Bravia Internet Video for streaming online video content like BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm and Demand 5.

It can also access Sony Entertainment Network (the online entertainment hub formerly known as Qriocity) and includes a USB port for connecting an external hard disk drive.

It’s compatible with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and can access BD-Live for extra online disc features.

Sony says the BDP-S185 uses 47% less power than its predecessor, the BDP-S370, and is narrower by a third.

It can upscale DVDs to ‘near HD quality’ and has a single HDMI output.

The Sony BDP-S185 is available now for £80.
