LoveFilm inks new deal with Sony Pictures

LoveFilm, the mail order and online streaming movie service owned by Amazon, has won the rights to stream Sony Pictures titles including The Social Network and Salt.

The deal with Sony for exclusive streaming rights follows a similar one between LoveFilm and Warner Bros, which yielded titles including The Dark Knight and The Hangover.

LoveFilm has also previously done deals with Entertainment One, Studio Canal, Disney, Lionsgate and Momentum.

The online video streaming war is hotting up and the announcement comes just after Netflix announced it had clinched a deal to add popular BBC shows to its upcoming video streaming service for the UK. That follows Netflix’s agreements with Miramax, Lionsgate and MGM for films including Pulp Fiction, Kick-Ass and The Hobbit.

With both Sony Pictures and MGM listed as co-producers on the upcoming James Bond film, Skyfall, it remains to be seen which service will get streaming rights to 007’s latest.
