CES 2012: Sony’s Crystal LED display

January 11, 2012 — Article

While the likes of LG and Samsung show off their new OLED screens as the direction for the future, Sony has taken a different tack, revealing a Crystal LED TV screen.

Sony Crystal LED 55in prototype display

The 55in prototype of the next generation screen that Sony showed at CES uses six million individual ultrafine red, green and blue LEDs for each pixel. It has 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, with a brightness ratio of approximately 400cd/sq m, and a claimed viewing angle of about 180 degrees.

The company claims that it offers contrast that’s up to 3.5 times higher than LCD with a 1.4 times wider colour gamut, and about ten times faster video image response time.

Power consumption is rated at 70 watts, and Sony says the technology is expected to be aimed initially at the commercial display sector rather than domestic viewing.

Sony also restated its intention to continue to develop OLED screens in the meantime, while it works on bringing Crystal LED to market.
