New EU legislation on the energy labelling for TVs comes into force on 30 November.

From that date all TV products will be required to display a label showing how much energy they use, rated from A to G, where A is the most energy efficient. Some manufacturers, such as Sony, have already started using energy saving labels.

Adrian Northover-Smith, head of corporate affairs at Sony UK, said: "We know that energy consumption is an important consideration when buying a TV, not least because televisions can account for almost 10 per cent of the average household electricity bill. Therefore choosing the right product can help people to save money as well as reduce their environmental impact.

“We welcome the new regulations and have included standard energy rating labels as quickly as possible so our customers are fully informed about the energy performance of all our BRAVIA televisions.”

Sony has pledged to cut the power consumption of its products by 30 per cent between 2008 and 2015 and the other big electronics manufacturers are also keen to push the eco button.
